Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are your qualifications?
I have an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling and am currently completing an MSc in Psychotherapy Studies.
  • Are you a member of a professional body?
I’m an Accredited Registrant of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). The NCPS is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) which promotes the health, safety and wellbeing of the public through regulation and voluntary registration. I’m also required to work within the NCPS’ Code of Ethics and Complaints & Concerns Procedure as well as committing to regular professional development. In a nutshell, this means my training and practice have met the standards needed to work competently and ethically with you. You are in safe hands.
  • What sorts of issues do you work with?
People bring many different things to me. Themes that I’ve helped clients with are: anxiety loss, including bereavement and grief low mood trauma responses fear of failure inner conflict procrastination feeling stuck facing uncertainty over-thinking self-criticism self-defeat self-doubt lack of meaning in life relating to others understanding our relationship with ourself I’m also experienced in working with college and university students and am particularly interested in what’s going on during our late teens and early twenties (I remember this time well – it wasn’t easy!). As I’m now in my early 50s, I’m curious about how the focus of our lives changes over time and value working with those who are interested in exploring what this means for them too.
  • How can I be seen?
While I’m doing my MSc, I’m working online and see clients using Microsoft Teams. Once my studying is complete in September 2025, I’ll be back to face-to-face work as well.
  • When can I be seen?
I work with private practice clients on Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10:30-14:30. I also offer some online evening appointments on Monday and Tuesday.
  • How soon can I be seen?
I offer a free 30-minute introductory Teams meeting or phone call within 3 days of you contacting me. This means I can listen to what is going on for you and work out if I can help. As our working relationship will be important, it’s also good for you to get a sense of who I am and whether you will feel comfortable working with me (there’s never an obligation to go ahead after our introductory conversation). If I’m not able to help you, I’ll be upfront about this and give you guidance on finding someone who can. If you decide you would like to work with me, we’ll aim to schedule your first session within one week of speaking together.
  • How long will I need counselling for?
This is tricky to estimate until I know a little more about what has led you to look for counselling support. Some people find that 6 to 8 sessions work well. Others may need less and some may prefer to work over a longer period. You can choose to work weekly, fortnightly or monthly. We’ll review regularly how you feel our work together is going and agree on the timescales and frequency that are best for you.
  • How much will it cost?
£60 for 1 hour of counselling £90 for 1.5 hours of counselling Fees need to be paid by bank transfer in advance before sessions take place.
  • What if I need to cancel?
You’ll need to give 24 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange a session. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice need to be paid in full.

You may have had counselling before (in which case you may have discovered there are a lot of therapists and a lot of different sorts of therapy out there), or this may be totally new to you. Either way, you’re likely to have some questions about how I work and what you can expect from our time together. I’ve tried to provide a flavour of this below, but if your question isn’t covered, please contact me and I’ll do my best to provide you with an answer.
